Electrical Load Calculations Before an EV or Heat Pump
An electrical load calculation evaluates whether the service or feeder can support the planned equipment under the applicable design method.

Quick answer
An electrical load calculation evaluates whether the service or feeder can support the planned equipment under the applicable design method. It is not the sum of breaker labels or a guess based on square footage. Before adding an EV charger, heat pump, or other major load, provide the electrician with the existing and proposed equipment details.
Why the monthly bill is incomplete
Your utility bill reports energy used over a period. Capacity planning considers electrical demand under relevant operating conditions. A low-energy month does not prove there is room for a new high-demand load, and a high bill does not by itself prove a service upgrade is required.
The calculation also needs the right equipment information. Heating arrangements, cooking equipment, water heating, motors, and vehicle charging can affect the assessment differently. Proposed equipment should be identified by actual specifications when available.
Assemble a useful project brief
- Existing major electric appliances and heating or cooling systems.
- Planned new equipment, with model information or intended charging rate.
- Other firm projects expected soon, such as a second EV or workshop.
- Existing generator, solar, battery, or energy-management equipment.
- Any known electrical symptoms or previous service-capacity assessment.
Do not remove panel covers or measure live circuits to complete this list. The electrician can determine what inspection and measurements are necessary.
Space and capacity are separate
A panel can have empty positions without adequate available capacity for the new load. It can also be full while the service capacity remains suitable for a different distribution arrangement. This is why “there is room for a breaker” is not a complete installation approval.
Ask the provider to identify whether the constraint is circuit space, feeder capacity, service capacity, equipment condition, or a combination. Each can require a different solution.
Compare the available approaches
In some projects, an appropriately designed energy-management system can control EV demand within available capacity. In others, a service upgrade is the practical answer. A different charging rate may also meet the driver's needs with a different electrical scope.
Compare the resulting behavior as well as installation cost. If charging pauses when other household loads rise, understand how that affects departure readiness. An option is only useful if it meets both electrical requirements and the household's routine.
Keep the assessment with the project
Request documentation of the proposed loads, assumptions, and design choice. If equipment changes before installation, have the assessment updated. A calculation for one charger setting or heat-pump configuration should not silently be reused for a different one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what homeowners and businesses ask us most.
No. Breaker totals do not represent the applicable load-calculation method.
It supports a compliant design under the applicable method. Any managed-load behavior and operating constraints should be explained separately.
It is usually more useful to confirm the electrical plan and suitable equipment requirements first, particularly when capacity is uncertain.
